My Testimony - Sherry Bright
The path of faith was never easy for me. I always believed in God, but what I believed about Him was distorted early on through a dysfunctional church upbringing. With a propensity towards anxiety and depression from day one, I soon became incapable of handling life on life's terms. I was innately fearful about life and struggled with low self-esteem. Early in my teens, I discovered that certain substances and illicit behaviors helped alleviate my inner turmoil.
After a failed marriage, my depression/anxiety worsened as I increasingly became emotionally dependent on alcohol and relationships to escape reality. In 2000, I finally accepted the fact that I couldn't change on my own. I found hope and a new way of life through Celebrate Recovery. Thanks to recovery, I've been free from the grip of alcohol abuse for 4+ years now. Although, I still struggle to do life on life's terms, I have tools, accountability, recovery partners and hope for today. God continues to remind me that peace remains only through Him and his perfect ways. My ways are only a means to an end.
I started writing songs early on in recovery to express my struggles, my breakthroughs, and just simple love songs to the Lord. Today, I thank Him for the trials as well as the good times, because Christ was made perfect through his suffering (Heb 2:10). I have come to realize that through Christ, the glass is never half empty. Everything I am, or ever hope to be is only because of His grace and perfect love.
Life Verse: We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed and broken. We are perplexed, but we don't give up and quit. We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going. 2 Cor 4:8-9 (NLT).
